What I can do to help

 Every guitar I see has it’s own personality, history and charms as well as problems. As such, every job I do to make your guitar into one you love to pick up and play, will be unique. Of course, some jobs are straightforward enough, from setups to wiring and pickups and nut replacements, so I can give you an idea of the costs involved below. 

For everything else, when you have an issue with your guitar, it’s best that I take a look at it in hand and you can explain what the problem is that you are experiencing. In many cases this can be solved quickly and easily – sometimes while you wait – and you have my promise I won’t recommend work on a guitar that isn’t necessary.

All the work I do is guaranteed so if there’s something wrong or something you don’t like about your guitar when it gets returned, I’ll happily put things right. Also if I think that a job is beyond my talents – such as an acoustic neck reset – then I won’t take it on, and will instead recommend someone who can do a great job for you.

I’ve spent 50 years playing and now working on guitars. This is my passion and I’m sure you are passionate about playing and caring for your guitar. If I can help make your guitar play better for you, then I will be delighted.

 

STANDARD Setup - The "Guitar MOT"

Depending on how well your new or second-hand guitar is playing, it may only need a Standard set up.

SERVICE INCLUDES :

  • 15 point inspection of guitar/bass + playing check
  • Bridge and Nut adjustment to player’s needs
  • Fret and fretboard cleaning/conditioning
  • Set intonation at 12th fret
  • Nut filing to ensure correct 1st fret tuning
  • Electricals check and fix where needed
  • Polish and clean before return

FULL Setup - The "Guitar SERVICE"

To remove “buzzes” on the guitar neck while playing, and chokes when bending notes, a fret levelling with crown (to return the dome to each fret) and polish, will leave your guitar feeling better in your hands then when it came out of the factory. This removes the high/low frets along the neck

FULL REFRET OF NECK

Sometimes a guitar has been loved and played to the point that the frets are worn beyond easy repair. In this case the best answer is to replace the frets. Sometimes a player will want thinner/thicker or taller frets to suit their style. In which case a refret is the answer.

All the features of the FULL Setup plus :

  • Removal of all frets from fretboard
  • Cleaning/prepping fret slots
  • Re-radiusing fretboard if needed
  • Installation of new frets

INSTALL NEW PICKUPS

One of the most popular ways to upgrade any guitar is to fit new pickups. There are fantastic choices from classic Fender, Gibson and Seymour Duncan as well as superb cheaper alternatives from Iron Gear, Warman and Wilkinson. 

SERVICE INCLUDES :

Pickup installation includes :

  • Removal of old pickup(s) to return to you
  • Installation of new pickup(s)
  • Additional wiring/installation of new pots if needed

INSTALL NEW NUT

The key to great tuning stability lies in the quality of your guitar nut. We’ve all experienced that “ping” when tuning, which is a sure sign the nut is badly cut and catching on the strings. I am a massive fan of TUSQ Graphtech nuts as well as bone nuts, which when cut properly will stop the tuning problems and make playing a joy.

Nut installation includes :

  • Removal of old nut
  • Clean, file and prep nut slot
  • Cutting, filing new nut to size
  • Fitting new nut, filing slots to corrrect height
  • Restringing guitar/checking tuning stability

WIRING REPLACEMENT/UPGRADE

A complete rewiring of your guitar is not usually necessary but often the knobs and switches wear out over time and need replacing. Whether it’s a dodgy volume control, crackly pickup selector or faulty jack socket, I can replace with CTS, Bourne and Switchcraft or whatever electronics you want to meet your needs and your budget

Electronics installation includes :

  • Removal of old parts (dispose/return)
  • Fitting and soldering of new potentiometers, wiring, capacitors and switches
